Why do Radon Testing?

What is radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is commonly found in soil. Low levels of radon are essentially harmless. However, high levels of radon can accumulate inside your home and lead to lung cancer.

Some reasons why you should do radon testing in your home or prospective home purchase as part of your home inspection:

  • Depending on the concentration Radon can be Deadly.
  • Radon is an invisible, odorless and tasteless gas, impossible to detect without the proper measurement tools and training and experience by a radon inspection professional.
  • IEMA Illinois Emergency Management Agency publishes that approximately 40% of homes tested in Will, Kendall and DuPage counties have radon levels which meet or exceed the unsafe level (4 pCi/L or above).   Detailed Information can be found at IEMA website
  • The U.S. Surgeon General has warned that Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States (second only to smoking), and first among non-smokers.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that approximately 21,000 deaths each year are attributable to radon-induced lung cancer.
  • Unsafe levels of Radon are found in homes which do not have basements or crawlspaces.
